Jon P.  Atienza is an intelligent automation (IA) leader at The Coca-Cola Company. He is a Lean Six Sigma Master Black Belt with more than 15 years of experience in process improvement and digital transformation. In his current role, he leads the Intelligent Automation program and development team to support the global enterprise digitalization efforts. His past work experiences include UPS, American Express Company, and Fiserv, where he worked as an operational auditor and advisory position. He is passionate about change management and governance since both are key success factors in any transformation endeavor.

What are some of the major challenges and trends that have been impacting the IT industry lately?

There are mainly two trends impacting the IT industry. First, the pandemic has created a huge movement for intelligent automation across every industry vertical. Secondly, given the huge amount of data that is available today, it has become a difficult feat for businesses to rightly utilize and trust them. Organizations need to learn how to have one source of data that’s actually trusted. So, data governance and management is another big movement that we are seeing today. Additionally, when it comes to challenges, data integrity and controlling data are big challenges faced by the IT industry today. This is because of the various platforms available in the industry, which makes it difficult for people to decide what to implement.

What are some of the latest projects that you have been working on?

In my role, I am responsible for leading the intelligent automation sector, which includes digitalizing manual processes by Microsoft Power Automate and then deploying that capability across the enterprise.

For intelligent automation, my goal is to determine how to create and utilize sophisticated technologies to build smarter processes, and evolve the program to adapt to current business needs. Moreover, as there are lots of data sources available, so there are few crucial questions to my approach: How can data be included in the intelligent automation workflow? How can I evolve the solution from a basic RPA automation to a solution that is more intelligent using AI?

What is your piece of advice for budding professionals in the field?

There are a variety of readily accessible online educational platforms available today. One should take up courses that will assist him or her in getting up to speed in the field he or she is interested in. Additionally, it is essential not to lose sight of existing project management approaches, such as Agile and Six Sigma.
